The fact that I had to disconnect my wifi and jump through hoops using command line to set up my new laptop without a Microsoft login is deeply invasive and arguably unethical.

This is what Apple and Google do with phones. Try using an iPhone without an Apple ID.

Can’t wait till I encounter a similar thing when setting up a pixel to run GrapheneOS. 😅

The devices are not where they make money and you only get to use it how they want.

I thought about this a lot when setting up my laptop.

How much if the deflationary prices we see in technology is due to more efficient means of production, and how much of it is due to product manufacturers harvesting digital identities for resale (pushing down the initial cost)?

I think it’s most definitely the latter. Devices are disposable, manufacturers don’t want them to last beyond 2 years and don’t want you fixing them. They you to constantly replace and upgrade. The real money is in the data. Harvested for their own good but worth more to data brokers. YOU are the product. Free apps are not free. Read some of the EULAs.

I now pay for a service to systematically remove my data from brokers. Imagine a world where we truly own our data and can retract it.

And yes, set up windows without an Office account!!!!

100% agree, dude.

people need to be educated as to why all of this surveilance is problematic for everyone and to vote for people who will make it illegal.

it's why i only use #Linux and GrapheneOS

I still use an old iPhone, but I’ll be switching to a pixel running Graphene here soon. Thanks for the encouragement 🌸🫂

Graphene is fun! 🤙 But dont expect everything working. Otherwise awesome!

but I haven’t found any laptop that works so great with the Linux maybe I have to explore it but it’s really tough. I think do update the drivers especially for the Wi-Fi.

I got a lenevo Thinkpad -if there’s one mainstream manufacturer I’d expect it to be more simple to set up Linux with, I would expect it to be them. 🤷‍♂️
