Not sure how many I can take 
Plant them under some partial shade & some right below older trees.

That looks good. Let those babies grow undisturbed for a year. Wood chip mulch around them. Water them well. DON’T put them in fancy potting soil or compost, NO babying besides that water. Clay soil is best. Divide the most robust plants in the second full year, and then get more aggressive after that when the punishment for losing a single one is lower.
Also, put some chicken wire over the area where the ones are that didn’t come up. Often, your most tender ones are getting browsed by wildlife, and repeated beating back can kill them before they get established.
Crazy, because last year, I had 2 very large plants that were healthy that I was able to chop and drop several times. They were alive last fall. As far as fencing, this is in our garden and is fenced.
If poor clay soil is best I should be able to grow a ton of these.
