Later this year, I will have an opportunity to offer a series of classes to young people (ages 12-18) about financial literacy, Bitcoin, and related topics. While the exact terms are still under discussion, I will have approximately 10-12 lessons, each being about 45 minutes in length.

I have started to note down some topics that I want to cover, such as definitions of money, time difference, inflation, and savings vs investments. When I get to the Bitcoin portion, I will naturally have to touch on self-custody, KYC, mining, scams, and related themes.

If you were in my shoes, what would be your must-have topics for a first-time course like this?

I would start with a brief history of money. Important to see and understand money as an emergent property that is established by social consensus rather than dictat. Rai stones & glass beads --> gold and silver --> fiat (how and why that occurred) --> BTC.

Nice to contrast with other modern economies where money arises spontaneously (@DerGigi has a great article here and could include a discussion of other closed economies like prisons where cigarettes are used as money).

Good luck
