Spam does not exist on the bitcoin blockchain.

If you pay the fee, you have the right to transact.

Hear, hear.

We're all libertarians until someone does something we don't agree with.

Would not say I don't agree with it - I installed an ordinals-disrespector-script on my node, so these type of transactions is not able to sully my node. My node, my rules. So don't care if something will be done against it by Core developers and the node majority or not. Just wanted to note that the mainlayer was not intended for these things in my personal view.

what do you mean by "sully"

I wondered if the influx of ordinals will bloat the blockchain size

could you explain a bit please?

I am running my node of Umbrel - and this should already tel you my level of knowledge.

It's only about that I am filtering out transactions with ordinals inscriptions from relaying it further to the network - so to say they are not "serviced" by my node.

It's just about not supporting this type of transactions.

You don't need to worry, everything is fine about your node too, just a "ideological" thing ;)

May be but in my view the mainlayer was concepted as a financial transactions settlement layer, not to inscribe some weird art....

This is my default position as well. Distributed Identifier network https://identity.foundation/ion/ is using the bitcoin blockchain for security so we should be careful to decide use cases.

What if spam does exist, and you have the fee money?

They run out of money

It’s not about if this is spam or not. It’s about if we want that the monetary base layer of the future becomes unusable because of some dick pic shitcoinery.

Let's also discuss then if we want the base layer to be where people record forever and publicly that today they bought a latte and a bunch of bananas using BTC, aka "let's build a circular BTC economy".

I think the base layer should be used for bigger things, like transfers of high amounts of value, property and other big financial transactions. So I find both the jpg monkeys and the latte people equally irrational. However -- to each his own, as long as they pay the price.

The fee market sorts the latte and the bananas out even short term. If the fee is higher than the latte nobody buys the latte.

It seems that stupid dick picks are profitable even at high transaction fees. Long term they are no problem imo. They are just a bubble. They’ll go away. But short term they are a problem for people that want to fund their lightning wallets, people who have to cash out or even coinjoins.

Hello, I'm new here. Can you recommend me interesting people to follow? Thanks

Follow the people i follow 🙂

Haha okey thanks

What if you can't pay? It risks to becoming a little elitist.

Fees will certainly go up because the system is programmed this way, but that would happen at a drastically different pace, when more users are on board and the LN layer is more mature, if Bitcoin is used only as money, as expected.

I was in this camp, but starting to have a change of mind. They are not paying a full fee as far as I understand, they have segwit discount. Also this can be used by miners to keep the fees high, or can just be used as an attack vector. Cut the blocksize to pre segwit block size and render jpegs onchain unpratical.

Agreed #[1] ?

That’s like saying junk mail is not spam because someone paid for the mailing costs. Fees stop spamming the same way “no guns allowed” signs stop mass shooters.
