This is genuinely depressing to see. We have the coolest fucking way known to mankind to send payments/tips/v4v and we are completely taking it for granted and not using it.

Probably has connection to the recent actions by usgov

That may explain part of it but the chart shows a steady downward trend since zaps were launched, with a couple of more active months here and there. There could also potentially be more non-zap payments occurring. It would also be interesting to compare this chart against the total value zapped each month expressed in sats and dollars.

novelty is wearing off and rate of novelty is dropping, while audience is not growing fast enough, as nostr hasn't reached the network takeoff velocity

yet

😔

We’ve plateaued with the current features of this protocol, it will take more innovation to leverage it in ways we can’t imagine yet

Need more zapathon

No

Lame

Too many leeches using it to collect zaps and not zapping back.

My guess is that those who are giving sats are tapped out, and those collecting sats are happily enriched.

That’s raw truth.

Doesn't really affect me at all. You shouldn't let your emotions get tied to how other people spend their money.

It affects anyone wishing to see Nostr become an economically healthy and active place for business/value exchange.

Well I wish for that and am unaffected, so you're wrong.

You have people who don’t even stack here. They only receive zaps, send very rarely as they don’t wanna spend all their earned Bitcoin. As long as people here not buy Bitcoin monthly, they won’t zap more, but less. If you aren’t buying Bitcoin for your future but only to spend it on other people posts (v4v), I would argue that, it is very fiat behavior as you spending more than you really can. Many people here are Bitcoin noobs and don’t understand they need to stack more today.

Maybe this correlates with monthly active users

Could be

Perhaps a drop in value worth zapping?

I believe the cliche "we are early" in case of #nostr is actually very true. Patience.

Definitely true 💜

More users, less zaps will become the norm, at some proportion i can't math out. There's only so much money to move around. Most don't have much to spend and aren't capable or motivated to create things to a quality that others consider valuable. Those that are will do well, and they are also the type that are more likely to save over spend since successful wealth accumulation is a multifaceted thing. Then there's the weird psychological side of it all. I've been trying to pay some awareness to my own zap-chology & I find if I see a note garner quite a bit of value from others, I'm less likely to zap any true amount of sats because I'm comparing my current zap wallet balance to what that single note has earned. I have to make conscientious effort to overcome that feeling for situations like supporting the tools that I use or believe in (with the expection of zapraiser goals that are visualized. That motivates me)There's all the little quirks too, like zapping friends first, zapping notes that haven't gotten any activity, respecting onlyzaps people, lowering my bigger zap amounts to avoid the top zap spot in primal... different personalities will handle zaps differently obviously but there will be a common subset of behaviors that emerge, maybe already have. I do have to say, last summer was wild, though, glad I was around for that 💜

don't under estimate gfy money

Of course not, that just highlights the behavior element even more

i think that when real money and zaps become as easy as likes likes will become boring and people will be chasing zaps like there is no tomorrow

think of pavlov's dog, when he's got used to salivating over a bell, and then suddenly there is delicious still warm corpses in front of him to chew on... how fast do you think that conditioning will reverse?

it will take a while for it to register, sure, but when it does, the frenzy will be ... how to not exaggerate?

Yeah, that has already happened a bit.

and that's just us tarders

Always appreciate your feedback and observations. Interesting point you make about zapping a note less when you see it already has been zapped quite a bit. It’s one way I have found that note zaps actually hurt creators, and I disagree with the mentality. It’s not how we approach other things in life. When I hear a song I like, for instance, I don’t look up album sales and then decide “the artist has received enough so I won’t pay for this one.” I pay for it, preferably in a way that gives the most direct support to that artist. I actually wish that nostr gave a way to disable others seeing your zap metrics, because people zap you more fairly in line with V4V that way. But everything here is public so that’s just something to overcome culturally perhaps.

Exactly! It's something I dont know if people acknowledge or even experience on the broader scale but i wanted to bring it to the surface. I can't say whether its good or bad because I operate from a monthly budget, so discounting something that the community already finds valuable enables me to share those sats with people who might be new & trying, in hopes that those people will appreciate it, become more involved, and stick around. Or sometimes just to make someone's day a little brighter. I don't know if it works. People seem to stay more for connection than monetary gain at this point (aside from the obvious exceptions)... I agree though, cultural change will have to happen. Hopefully acknowledging stuff like this can help shift it. 😊 ...and thank you, I appreciate your perspectives too 🫂

Although I didn’t take the time to analyze actual zap metrics, anecdotally I did experience this on the receiving end last year when the iOS clients lost note zaps. There was a period of time when iOS clients removed note zaps and people hadn’t figured out the workarounds. I noticed an uptick in overall zaps received, and when note zaps began showing back up I noticed my zaps received decrease again. I discussed it somewhere at the time, not sure if that was on nostr or in a telegram group. Either way, it was noticeable enough a difference to catch my attention. I personally believe that approach is damaging to creators and others who are producing value. Of course everyone can spend the way they choose, and that includes zapping for the fun of it or to demonstrate to new users how it works. Different people value different things, but I believe it’s better to zap others according to what something is worth to me. If I go out to eat at a busy restaurant, I don’t think “wow this server already got a lot of tips tonight so I don’t need to tip them.” I tip them what their service was worth to me. Or a street performer with a bucket for tips. I don’t look at it and think “20 other people have dropped $1 each in there so I’m only going to tip a nickel.” If I liked it enough I’ll still tip $5 or whatever. Zaps are fun, and to that end ensuring that everyone gets a “fair share” makes sense, but it will mean that zaps only stay in the realm of being fun. If they’re to be used for serious economic activity, then what and who we zap ought to be based more on who/what is providing us with the value we want and whether we want them to continue doing so.

😂 That wait staff analogy is great... and exactly why zap numbers should decrease over time, if things take off. We don't randomly hand dollars to conversations overheard at the next table during that meal either, but it's still early, there's no central entity to hand out coupons & free appetizers to get people in. Eventually the fun will fade, more valuable content will exist, and clever people will profit. Maybe that's part of what's happening now to some level with lower counts? As far as the visuals, tip psychology gets weird. It's more like a tip jar on a counter, where if it's empty it's more likely to stay empty but also if it's stuffed it disincentivizes adding. There's a sweet spot where people just feel more comfortable about giving. I don't know if that conformity mentality will ever go away enough to make a broad impact. We can hope but we're pack animals. I don't know, I have tons of thoughts around this subject and could probably go on all day. I'll save you any further agony 😂🫂💜 But after we hit that 3m mark on band's stats, I'll try shifting my own behavior to some other strategy so I can report back on our next conversation about it. 😂🤣

i just experienced today, someone resonating with my fuck these rabble rousing (pun intended) antibitcoin content fucktards whining endlessly about how the users who value the things that bitcoin does, about nostr, are ... bitcoiners, and as though we are obliged to put on some theatre show for them to assugage their cult indoctrination and not offend their infinite versions of their sexuality and self identity

and i had to zap him 1440 sats for being a human being who actually isn't a cult drone

I am Zapping away almost every day , hopefully I get Zapped back one day

TheWildHustle is still zapping

if you hand the economic secrets over to idiots, you just train more idiots
