You can just as easily build an idea without fracturing the context of a conversation.

Let's look at this example: nostr:nevent1qqst00nqnxl83snhhd8wmr8nhgk7t3kyaayyfvkm4xfe3m4kneturmqppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qgswex7hge25dwsxrawlmeck5neq70e8anpgefy8qa67t6znmug6n5qrqsqqqqqpnrhly7. I have no need to talk to nostr:nprofile1qqsy67zzq5tc9cxnl6crf52s4hptdwhyaca5j7r8jwll535tdadedvcprdmhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumn0wd68yurvv438xtnrdakj7qg3waehxw309ahx7um5wghxcctwvshszrnhwden5te0dehhxtnvdakz7wn2st2. His report is factually correct, there is nothing I want to tell him or his followers. I have an opinion on what is being reported, and I want to share that opinion with my followers. I honestly don't understand what is wrong with it, or where the context was fractured.

Well, one problem I have with it is how there is no agreed upon standard for it in clients. There was a year or two where I could not even get a notification when someone quoted my note. I see from your raw note data, you are probably using damus? Because, there is a "q" tag and an "nevent" content in the note itself. Other clients just use "e" tags, or who knows actually. Like I said, there's no standard here. So in effect, people were "talking" about my content, without my knowledge and acting like they're doing me some kind of favor. Or maybe this was their intention all along, to just talk shit using my content as a crutch for having no content of their own while not allowing me to find it and reply back. Meanwhile I am oblivious as the OP, get no credit for the content, see no interaction from it. Many tend to treat a quote note as a reply itself, they have no idea this is happening or that they are breaking the chain of context.

But anyway, let's put that aside for now, clients could have interoperable standards, just because they chose not to, does not make the concept itself lame.

As for the concept itself, the quoting of a note. I tend to browse nostr like a forum. When I am out of main note content (happens a lot) I am just browsing the reply feeds. I would have seen your note as a comment on flash's content, and I would have been able to pull up the entire comment tree under this content and browse it and be able to follow the conversation that led up to your opinion, if there was any. Quote notes take that all away, because of the difficulty of crawling the references. So, they are used to post things out of context and gather attention or zaps from some other content out there. Those zaps, should have gone to the original poster, without which, the quotoor would have nothing to talk about. But only amethyst supports zap splits and they don't work anyway because nobody can tell what is what in most renderings of notes. Am I replying to a quote? Am I replying to the original note? Am I zapping which? Etc.

I do understand, that the WWW was built on hyperlinks, and that quote notes are sort-of like hyperlinks for nostr. I just think it's poorly implemented and overused. Why even have replies at all? Why not just everything quote notes? That seems like how a majority of people use nostr is just quote note central.

It sounds like a lot of your issues come from either clients doing a bad job of implementing them, or not aligning with the way you personally want to use Nostr.

I find the experience much better using Amethyst. I get notified about quote posts, and zap splits are a great feature that does work. It's disappointing other clients drop the ball so hard on this. Amy even goes a step further and let's you fork a note, taking the original content and being able to repost it as my own, with edits if wanted, with a link back to the original authors note.

Ownership of content is an interesting thing to take into consideration. I often see my memes posted by others, accumulating zaps that don't go to me, and commentary I don't get notified of. It could be annoying, but I choose not to care. I put it out into the world, and the world will do whatever with it. Maybe Nostr needs to integrate licensing and DRM into notes to stop that from happening. People could mark their notes as proprietary, or open source depending on how they feel.

What is your opinion on highlights that Gigi has been playing with so much?

Highlights are cool. And Ill capitulate on quote notes too I suppose 😁

Time to start debating DRM protected notes...

I'm using #Amethyst, and to be honest, I don't know much about the interoperability. It works for me, it works in Nostrudel, and it works in YakiHonne. While I know there is a conversation tab, I rarely use it, and I can't tell if I'm the outlier or you are.

Anyway, it feels like you are creating a false dichotomy of one or the other, but that is not true. Reply and Quote are two distinct tools used for different kinds of jobs:

1) Talking directly to the OP and engaging with their followers.

2) Introducing or building on OP's post, and presenting it to my audience.

Both can be used for good or for evil.

If people can't distinguish whether they are looking at a Quote or a Reply, then they are not compatible with their client, and they should consider using a different one.

well, it's interesting, yeah and nostr:npub1m64hnkh6rs47fd9x6wk2zdtmdj4qkazt734d22d94ery9zzhne5qw9uaks mentioned this too. Part of the reason, maybe even the full reason that I was so annoyed by quote notes, was I felt so burnt by the Damus vs Amethyst wars of quote notes. I am still not sure that I can see notes quoted by Damus in Amethyst. Perhaps I am wrong and it has since been 'fixed' but that was a very rude awakening.

Now I will be finding out more very soon, because I am attempting to implement this + replies, and so far, yeah. Lotta IF statements that I would prefer didn't exist :)

As an Android users I was protected from this friction. I'm so glad.

You must really hate air replays.
