Unpopular: Influencers are great actually.

If I want to get into a new hobby, niche, subculture etc… there are already like 5-10 top influencers ready to tell me everything I need to know like a decentralized mentor network.

I’ve owned firearms for over a decade, but finally decided to get serious about training. Went on guntube found the top guys, learned the techniques, went to the range, applied them. Six months later I am really fucking good at shooting.

Same thing with weightlifting, running, cooking, macro economics, finance, snowboarding, home improvement stuff. The list is literally endless.

Influencers with good reputations and respect in their communities provide a valuable service in almost every arena.

They lessen the learning curve and that is a huge deal when getting into something.

The only time influencers are bad is when they are imposters. When they’re pretending to be something they are not.

Most of the so called influencers are the imposters…anybody that teaches their skills aren’t trying to influence, they are simply sharing their knowledge open source

Yeah, I don't feel "influencers" is really the best term here. You can learn a ton of stuff on the internet from highly knowledgeable & skillful people but they're not necessarily influencers.

Yeah but that’s the default jargon these days
