The biblical word that I’m assuming they’re talking about is מעבר. It does, in fact, means “crossing”, but that’s where the truth in the argument ends. No where in the Tanach (Jewish Bible) is it used to describe becoming a Hebrew, as conversion was not a “thing” yet and even today works far differently than in Christianity. You became a Hebrew by birth only. Likewise, it has nothing to do with Abraham, or the root of his name. Names and proper nouns in Hebrew don’t always have a the standard 3-letter root of ancient (or modern) Hebrew. Even if they did, Abraham’s name (אברהם) starts with an א (Aleph), not an ע (Ayin). While they (usually) make the same sound in modern Hebrew, they were very different letters in the ancient script and were pronounced differently.

i still think it is more contructive to attack the information and not the messenger since the information is nearly correct.

i understood that the hebrew people adopted the name in part from abrahams travels and cultural cross over to monotheism.

from a moorish perspective i see the ancient hebrew language as a canaanite (moabite) derivative and even the person you mentioned associate with the laguage revival wearing a moorish (fez) headdress.

also i found the video interesting because what we call ancient hebrew today is a modern creation like the state of isreal. i had no idea 🤷🏾‍♂️

In the case of that article you posted from a cult, it is definitely acceptable to also target the messenger.

You are correct that Hebrew and cross (verb) share a root, as the name came from Abraham’s crossing of the desert, but that has zero affiliation with a cross (noun), also called a crucifix. That’s a completely different word with a completely different root and the correlation you’re seeing pushed in those articles you’re finding only works when you disregard the original language and translate it into English without context.

Also, Abraham and his descendants weren’t monotheists for the first few thousand years, they were henotheists. Monotheism wouldn’t become adopted by the Hebrews until several hundred years before Jesus.

Ancient Hebrew is a language that dates back thousands of years and branched from Akkadian. Canaanites didn’t actually have their own language and spoke mostly Moabite, Hebrew, or Phoenician, depending on their region.

While modern Hebrew is different, it is based entirely on the ancient Hebrew. An incredible amount of work was done to modernize the language with an expanded vocabulary and updated grammar, but anyone that is fluent in modern Hebrew can also read and at least minimally understand ancient Hebrew in the same way that any fluent modern English speaker can read and understand Shakespeare.
