Why do you think that?
Discussion
If we think about T2D (time to destination), there are several reasons why FSD has major advantages
- it is point2point. It picks you up where you are, and drops you off where you need to be. The total time savings is super high.
- For trains to compete, they’d need to build exponentially more stations which would expo raise costs.
- Yes trains are fast, but the time getting to them, waiting, riding, and then walking back makes them time intestine.
- regarding energy usage. I’m a bit less sure of this one. Which one is more environmentally friendly? You would think trains hands down, but if a car is working 24/7 like a Waymo. Pooling riders. Being easier to repair. Maybe this gap is shorter than we think
- a self driving fleet with high communication can coordinate more per time. Thus you could raise speed limits without increasing risk
- trains are expensive. Cars are not. Tunneling is expensive. Roads are not. Trains may pose safety anxiety, cars less so.
We can think of LA deciding that all cars must leave Los Angeles. There will be 1 million Waymos in the city. I honestly think this could work. And we could turn every parking garage into a park 🌳
