Any recommendations for purifying water?

You can distill using sunlight in a pinch by creating a tent with plastic sheeting over a bowl of dirty water. After a while, collect the drippings from the condensate on the plastic sheeting.
If you don't want to spend money, simply boiling the water for 3 minutes would do the trick.
Tap/Bottled water should be fine in most cases.
