i do not understand how the establishment was able to convince leftists that a currency owned by the people, with the means of production owned by the people, is less favorable that fake currency controlled by bankers and corporations.

Because the leftists *are* the establishment now. They've become the party of bureaucracy and corruption, just as many viewed the right 30 years ago.
