People will always voluntarily organise and invest in protection, just not into enormous non-voluntary government mafias, as long as we can take the money out of their hands in some sly roundabout way.

Then that is a government and kind of by extension a country. Based on the fact that people always voluntarily organize and invest in protection (government). They do that because life sucks without property rights. There has to be an ultimate authority in a given area if you hope to have anything resembling a society.
We agree probably that it should be extremely limited, voluntary in the sense that people choose to pay on their own for said government (not that thieves, murderers, etc can just be exempt). I don't agree that countries should have governments that steal, but I don't see how "fuck countries" or anarchy is a solution worthy of an adult mind.
Countries can be moral and that's my point here. I still have hope for an ideal America. Or at least closer to ideal. Nothing will ever be perfect. Monetary theft is absolutely one of the biggest issues for every country.
I forgot to mention that ultimate authorities tend to be bad which is why I think the US has came the closest to doing government right. Our Constitution gives us those concepts without the authoritarianism that goes with something like a kind or central authority. We have many smaller authorities for government. Again, not perfect, but better than any other government currently or anarchy and the gang warfare that ultimately results.
Was reading, everything was going fine until your second or third sentence where you said voluntary and government - The two are mutually exclusive. There my interest in reading broke through a support line, massive wick down. It's a fundamental point.
