Happy Tuesday, Nostr.

I gotta say, the Passport Prime from nostr:npub1s0vtkgej33n7ec4d7ycxmwt78up8hpfa30d0yfksrshq7t82mchqynpq6j is cool as fuck.

This feels like the first real-world cyberpunk + cypherpunk handheld device and I’m so here for it…

I’m wondering if the “installable third-party apps” include encrypted messaging like nostr:npub1exv22uulqnmlluszc4yk92jhs2e5ajcs6mu3t00a6avzjcalj9csm7d828 that would pretty much complete the picture.

Onward 🫡

This is legitimately the first hardware signer device that I really wanted at first sight. Looks wicked cool, and I can see a ton of varied uses cases for it.

I wonder about the security aspects of it though; would love to hear more insight from technical nostriches and also some firsthand experiences as these find their way into users' hands.

I’ve wondered this too. We talk about reduced attack surface as an important factor in hardware wallets, so even with sandboxed apps, it’s an increase in attack surface.

But I think I wouldn’t use one of these for the bulk of my stack. I’d use it for the various security tools, a few custom apps, and maybe a bit of spending money.

I’d see it as also serving as one key within a multi sig.

It’s funny, I’ve been waiting on buying a passport for over a year because it felt “right” to wait and I’ve learned to trust my intuition, and now I’ve stopped hearing that “wait” so it makes sense why!

100% same here. Already feels like it has a unique place in the lineup

Bitcoin only hardware wallets for me

nostr:npub1jg552aulj07skd6e7y2hu0vl5g8nl5jvfw8jhn6jpjk0vjd0waksvl6n8n is the best 🫶🏼

I hear you for sure, and typically, same here (with the exception of the first ledger I ever bought, before I knew better).

I wouldn’t use this for more than a bit of “well-secured” spending money, or maaaaaaybe as 1/5 in a strong multi sig, but only if a feature exists that allows me to hide certain keys or make the file look like another app or something (the way Samourai did on mobile, if I recall).

I love the idea of a device like this for all the other (non-monetary) encryptions/backups, because as of now I really don’t feel confident storing a bunch of disparate file types or sticky notes in safes or whatever.

Like the Apple encrypted backup, for example. My iCloud content is pretty vanilla, but it’s still mine and I want it private. But like with a seed phrase, if you lose the backup (and your human backup buddy) then you’re f’d. And while with Bitcoin it’s arguably higher stakes, it’s also a simple and widely practiced process to back up and store a seed phrase on steel.

With iCloud (and work backups, and a Yubikey, and fifteen other accounts, etc.) I don’t have a unified system or device that I’m confident about. That’s where I think this new toy will shine…

Hey nostr:npub15c88nc8d44gsp4658dnfu5fahswzzu8gaxm5lkuwjud068swdqfspxssvx or nostr:npub1lqvv69u549atefvcyfht30lemlyvl9jnz4l7c6ejs20yzpq7hh7sjjfx0r I was looking at the “includes 2 year warranty” if you preorder the first batch. Does this include any potential issues or defects that only become apparent in batch 1? I’m normally early (but not first) to new tech, because I like to wait for the first round of customer feedback to inform a second iteration. But in this case I’m feeling too excited to wait.

Just want to be sure that the warranty has me covered if there’s an unforeseen issue. Appreciate you all 🤜💥🤛

Just finished the UM episode — consider my inquiry about the warranty to be a question for the upcoming Bitcoin brief 🫡

Answered above but perhaps good for other plebs to hear

The extended warranty covers all 1000 Early access customers. After that we revert back to the default 1 year.

Consider me n/1000. Does it cover pretty much anything (other than doing something stupid like taking it swimming, losing it in a boating accident, etc.)?

I seen the video and bought. I’m here for it and team nostr:npub1s0vtkgej33n7ec4d7ycxmwt78up8hpfa30d0yfksrshq7t82mchqynpq6j all day

Yep

Brilliant ✅

Yeah, I'm not sure I'll ever end up buying one, but it is really frickin' neat. Great way to onboard people into better security I think who aren't already familiar with things like 2FA or using something like a yubi key.

I get that! I think for me, I’ve been looking for a good way to store the other non-monetary backups and this looks like just the ticket lol

Honestly, I still kind of want one just to play with it, even if it won't be a primary device. 😅
