Analog RYTM mk2 is the apex predator of drum machines
Discussion
I just got the volca drum, not that it's in the same ballpark lol
Nice! Is it easy to use?
Not had time to even open the box ðŸ˜
I don't think it is particularly easy to use tho tbh, from what I could see from tutorials before I bought. But I mostly got it cos it's cheap and is meant to be surprisingly capable as a weird FM synth as well as a drum machine:)
Managed to get an especially cheap one too:)
Probably shouldn't have got it lol, I'm not sure I have any time, but the price was too tempting
15mins here and there
FM synthesis opens up a lot of things sonically :)
This guy is basically a volca drum black belt. Not that I want to/ could make anything like this, but I like his videos anyway, seems to be having a lot of fun
Oh wow. Very glitchy. He must have spent thousands of hours mastering that box
Fax

Dont own one but used.
It’s the type of box that really rewards you if you take the time to learn it properly. Loving it
So. Musician? Or just hobby? You got trax?
Hobby mostly. Nothing with the RYTM yet. Got it less than a month ago. Already familiar with the elektron workflow (the sequencer) but quite a lot to learn still with the synth engines+sampling.
So basically you have a lot of time on your hands 🤣
Not really no 😂
It’ll take me a while to master it
Sounds like fun and time well spent :)
It’s really fun. I wish there were more hours in the day though 😂
Do you know of midori takada?
No I don’t. Composer?
Yeah. She does only percussion instrumental tho. Acquired taste :P
its fucking dope. the mfb tanzbar does give it a run for its money though!
Same form factor as the TR-8S, kinda. All analog? How does it do sampling? Via SD Card?
yeah not the same thing it doesn't do sampling. its just an absolutely beautiful sounding analog drum machine. berlin in a box. i use them both together the whole time. i absolutely love them both.
Ah I understand. Do you double you layer a kick of each on top of each other? Or you just do transitions from one to another?
sometimes.... the tanzbar just cuts through the mix differently.... the stuff i'm doing isnt really 4 to the floor or anything... i tend to layer loads of stuff until it feels right. the digitakt gets thrown in there too... kind of moderatty (i wish) type of thing im going for...
One of my favourite bands
legend! they're so great. really cool. can't wait to have something to show for myself. will be sure to send it your way!
Same. I gotta get to know the beast better first. Trying to do stuff with A4 mk2 as well
ah man the a4... it took me a while for it to click but i LOVE it...
I am not buying any more gear anymore btw! ðŸ«
the minimoog was it.
i hope.
You have GAS my friend 🤣🤣🤣
haha shhhh
😅
😂😂
its a store of value right? 😂
Elektron boxes sure 😂
Other boxes it’s hit or miss. Really depends
yeeeeeaaah........ someone better call the gas man 😂
😂😂
If you have to compare the learning curve of the a4 and the rytm? Which one is harder. For someone who already knows the elektron sequencer
i found the a4 much less immediate. the rytm i got really quickly actually. the rytm stands on its own better. you can take it away and jam with it on its own...
This is my feeling as well. Already making decent jams with the rytm alone.
I’ve seen on forums that a4 is sometimes considered an even better drum machine but I imagine there’s a lot of parameter locks involved since it’s only 4 tracks
i've read stuff along those lines too, and there are drum presets on the a4. what's the point. the rytm is much more immediate and much more fun for drums. you read all sorts of nonsense in these forums, mostly its cope i've come to the conclude. The A4 as capable as it is would be very fiddly for doing what the Rytm does without blinking. You have 4 channels on the A4 obviously, so you're limited to four sounds unless you use p-locks to change patches etc... I've never bothered to be honest, but I do have gas and a proliferation of drum machines 😂
I thought there might be some cope in there 🤣 Reddit is…something 🌈
I’ll try and make a bit just for fun. But later. Rytm is too good. For now im using it to make weird sounds to complement the rytm
yeah i'm literally using the A4 right this second. I love it for leads... arpeggios.... radioheady kinda droney atmospherey stuff and then automating the fx sends is where it comes in to itself for me...
the digitone is where my gas has gone too far. everyone says its like the best synth ever (the II) ... it hasn't clicked. i hope it does. i love fm stuff. i used to do synthwave stuff the whole time...
like this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yufr9SJ_qSY is me...
... and here too
I read this too about the digitone 2. But you already have an a4 🤣
Did you make the 2 tracks with the digitone? The visuals are pretty cool too
nah those are actually all ITB ... my reason for the GAS is i wanna make stuff with zero commercial intent that sounds real and expensive... like how Random Access Memories sounds expensive. I want people to hear its quality but be confused by the fact that its not trying to do anything commercial... that's the goal anyway. the things bitcoin allows us to pursue!
So you use hardware + daw. This is interesting. When you use rytm too? With overbridge?
well...
no! 😂
my process has been a lot of trial and error – getting back in to music after years away...
now I sequence EVERYTHING live on the Push 3 in standalone. I run loops on the Elektron boxes too.
Everything runs in to a Model1 which is a mindblowingly cool mixer that's kind of closer to a Sherman Filterbank than a mixer. It sculpts the sound, 100% analog signal path. I also have hardware sends from that to reverb and delay (OTO Bim and OTO Bam)
And then at the moment I record everything to audio. And that becomes my demo.
I'm gonna spend the next 3 months doing that. Zero judgement on the output. Just freely creating these moments and demos.
And then I'm gonna shortlist an 'album' and finish those tracks in Live.
I did start using Overbridge until I discovered how much better everything sounds out of the analog outs versus over USB and Overbridge. The gear sounds WAY cooler out of the analog outs... So... Yeah.
No Overbridge for me, and I started from a point of thinking Overbridge was the answer to all of life's problems...
From going down that rabbit hole, Overbridge applies compression... It has to – the Digitakt II as one example has 16 stereo channels at 24bit 48khz over USB 2... 🤔
I was just curious. I use analog output to zoom recorder. Done. Dawless. For sure less options than on the computer but I’m trying to stay away from it while playing. And also I’m not trying to record an album
yup thats it. i record in to a tp-7... same thing...
So much gear it’s crazy. Do you do this professionally or its a hobby?
this is 90% of my time. i run several businesses which i'm trying to offload and this is what i want to spend my time and life mastering
Very nice! You peobably know this already but you can get huge tax cuts if it’s your main occupation. Make a bogus youtube channel…
lol one of the businesses is a digital agency which now has a music consultancy ðŸ«
Excellent

and it is a lot of gear but it's part of the vision honestly, like i said...
i want to make this album
and then i want to create like live music videos in the middle of kenya which are half live shows half nature documentaries with synths blasting in to the masai mara 😅
so yeah
there is a vision!
Do you play most of them in a jam together or more your favourite one or two?
now i have my head wrapped around like... what i like each instrument for... i just reach out for them when i feel like using them. i try and avoid the temptation of using everything on everything... its an exercise in mastery for me. i just keep at it every day and its amazing how much it just all clicks together with time. just simply by struggling with them and using them you'll eventually find yourself knowing when to use them
This makes sense
here it is just for your curiosity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwnXySDRX9g ... it's not comparable to the rytm. a different drum beast
Bookmarked this. I’ll check it out. Thanks!
