Then what you want to do is advocate for ranked choice voting so we can have a viable third option.
Discussion
Oh I'm all for that🤷🏽
Me too. I’ll vote for democrats while loudly advocating that they get their shit together and do what the people want. And at the same time I’ll advocate for ranked choice voting as part of larger voting reform. When that happens at a moral federal level I will be happy to put more support behind third party candidates. I would love to have another option.
I'm not trying to come off condescending.
If I am I apologize.
Especially in what I'm about to say.
THIS. What you just said I absolutely advocate for.
While I highly disagree with voting for anyone who in my heart I know is a terrible person. I still vote. I just vote more the 3rd party.
But in the same way I love that you vote the way your heart tells you to. But even more so I absolutely love that you dissent and loudly with what you disagree with. That is the important part. Even if it's with me. 🤷🏽
Absolutely. I think the democrat platform is going to learn hard and fast that they need to shift towards actually doing things and leveraging their power. That is, if they want to win over the younger voters.
The problem with democrats is that they give up. In swing states they won’t actually push for progressive policies that most Americans agree with. Instead they grovel and try to appeal to more conservative democrats. Universal access to healthcare, student loan forgiveness, access to reproductive rights, workplace protections, zoning reform that incentivizes affordable housing: these a small sample of progressive ideas with majority support from Americans.
Look at Bernie tho!! His platform alone shifted the entire discussion towards universal healthcare, student debt forgiveness, wage increases, labor support. As we get young, emboldened, passionate Democratic candidates around the country on the ballots, we will see an even greater shift in the future. The Democratic Party needs to get their act together. It’s unacceptable.
I agree with you in your sentiment that the Democrats are going to learn.
But I totally disagree with you on the angle.
I think progressive and further in the fringe democrats are going to learn that the majority of Americans feel left out by both sides becoming more extreme🤷🏽
The “extreme” progressive policies that I’m talking about have overwhelming support by democrats and republicans, and are not considered extreme in many parts of the world, such as Europe.
Which policies
Universal healthcare, prison reform (end school to prison to pipeline), zoning reform for better housing, stronger anti-monopoly and anti-trust laws, access to reproductive healthcare.
Ok. I'm cool with the names of all these things.
I would hope they wouldn't slip in other things which they often do.
But for me that changes the argument because I believe in policies more than I do people.
Republicans, Democrats, and not can bring up policies.
But I still don't see why voting for one person or another makes that policy happen. 🤷🏽
I don't see how voting for a more progressive politician that believes in easy more radical things will make it happen better than a level headed person if the majority of people believe in that thing anyway🤷🏽
Nvm that wasn't your argument.
Bottom line. Things you listed.
Not so bad🤷🏽
I believe in policies too, not this political cult of personality that we seem to be surrounded by.
I don’t believe we necessarily need loud and brash voices advocating for these policies. These are level headed, test and tried, supported by the majority of Americans. As such, they should be presented in ways in which everyone can understand, by average people that can best represent these poltiical without trying to virtue signal, act superior, etc.
Good example. I saw this senator on instagram who I didn’t agree with on everything. But what stood out was how he would make these two minute videos calmly explaining what was going on behind the scenes politically and the things he was actually doing. We need more people who are willing engage with Americans in that way, who understand our impatience and seek to inform instead of leaving us in the dark.
Everything you just said I agree with and wish was 3000% more
And this is coming from someone who considers myself very much a leftist.
I perceive leftism to be about maximizing freedom by dismantling the mechanisms of state violence. Whether that’s the military industrial complex or the prison industrial complex, they are oppressive and need to be abolished.
We need to bring back social spaces that have largely been left to the wayside by privatization. Better funding for our parks, better city planning that incentivizing people to get outside and walk- getting back to real socializing like we used to have.
We need more of a focus on digital spaces and the technology that’s emerging. Whether it’s digital rights and privacy protections or the right to repair: we need to make sure that technology and the data it collects is not weaponized by governments or corporations.
I find that commendable.
But I'm an anarchist and an absurdist 🤷🏽
I find seeing freedom in signing over your control to any higher power kind of laughable.
That's not too say you shouldn't. I just think so systems are corrupt and we should fight corruption whether we see it🤷🏽
In that sense you're kind of a hero to me. Even if I disagree with you on a lot🤷🏽
But you're doing what you believe and I think in this universe that's all we can do.
I hold great regard for both anarchism and absurdism. I think we both agree on which paths society should take, it’s more the road to get there that we may disagree on. But it’s good to highlight agreements rather than differences 💕
Very well said. Same destination. But we're disagreeing on the driver.
