"If I do as he says, he will leave me alone" seems to apply as much to underlings as leaders. There is one on every team that gets pacified despite doing nothing of value.

Lots of managers seem to be simply beyond their depth. Not bad intentions, just trying to hold onto power while feeling out of control. Does not sound pleasant.
