Wife died of hantavirus several days before him.
He had Alzheimer's.
So, she dies and then he's in this Alzheimer's doom loop, unable to assess the situation or get help and ultimately dies from probably advanced heart disease, malnutrition, unregulated medication schedule...who knows.
yea really really really fucked. but you forgot one of the worst parts....
one of their multiple dogs was found dead, too. The dog had JUST came home from a medical procedure and was locked in a crate in the bathroom (separated from the other dogs).... that can give me a nervous breakdown thinking about it
I knew the dog had died; didn't know details. I really hope the reason the other two didn't starve was b/c they had autonomous access to food, and not something sadder, like Gene still having presence of mind to feed them while he struggled to address the tragedy.

This is why I can't wait for in-home robotic assistants.
I would much rather die fighting a robot, addled by dementia, thinking I was in the butlerian jihad.
