once more for those in the back. if you care about your privacy and security, stop using telegram.

#telegram does not use end-to-end encryption by default, collects and stores user data, including your IP address, username, phone number, contacts, and device details. it is not a safe or secure app.

What do you use? Simplex? Tbh I barely use telegram outside of work chat. Just curious what the latest recommendations are..?

Matrix for enterprise

SimpleX for personal contacts

Never tried matrix, but see it about a lot.

I'm not v enterprising. Maybe I have no need

whatsapp says their messages are end to end encrypted, so i guess its better than telegram? https://faq.whatsapp.com/820124435853543/?helpref=uf_share

telegram is better than whatsapp.

i do like their stickers, heres their explanation about end to end thingy https://telegra.ph/Why-Isnt-Telegram-End-to-End-Encrypted-by-Default-08-14

The fact that they have an explanation instead of encryption tells a lot

Are DMs encrypted? Or not at all?

Is Discord any better?

I’m thinking of average-person-friendly support communities for tech products etc…

Use Matrix

Discord is completely compromised

💯

discord couldn't care less about user privacy

Figured. I haven’t tried matrix before. Is it “normie friendly”?

Part of it I realize is for a privacy focused app to build up the critical mass to even gain normal users…

many organizations use it at a support room. i suggest watching a video to familiarize yourself. it is similar to nostr in that it is a protocol and there are different clients.

in the beginning it is easy to just start off with the main client 'element' and use their server. it is more centralized when you use their server, but it's a good place to start.

you can set up your own server later. as always, back up your keys so you don't lose your chat history.

"The simplest way to sign up and try Matrix out is to use Element, a web-based client. Go to app.element.io to get started - this will allow you to sign up for a new account on Matrix.org, and get chatting right away. There are also native Element apps for Android and iOS."

What is a good messaging app for this purpose?

matrix for business, simplex for personal.

But telegram has the best memes!

There's actually no point for using end to end encryption for public conversations (especially on public channel / group). There are millions of chat being transmitted to Telegram server & they don't have much time to read all of these message at all.

Only use end to end chat session when you have extremely sensitive message to sent in very surveillance place.

This is not true at all.

Sending extremely sensitive message in a slightly surveilled environment is stupid, as well as sending moderately sensitive information in a very surveilled environment, stupid.

The whole take is impractical.

Even if the groups were encrypted they would just get into the groups and log the chats.
