Mr. Swann, is the value of a hardware wallet that it comes with its own 12/24 set of key words as opposed to a hot wallet that generates these key words for you ?

How do I trust trust the hardware ?

A hardware wallet generates seed phrases offline. If your computer or phone is compromised in some way it connects to the internet which means people could potentially hack you. A hardware wallet does not connect to the internet thus safer. At least that is how I understand it.

ok .. phone .. so sim swap attack. Desktop computer .. well, those are sort open book. I added Two factor authentication to my Desktop app thingy ... but a Blockstream Jade looks like the next step up ... I think I'm gonna order direct from Blockstream.

Looking into Swan Vault whish is like a 2/3 thingy.

Wherever I turn though .. there's always nuggets of "TRUST".

Is there a thing where I can just randomly generate my own 24 word phrase. Thinking of buying a desktop and just keeping it offline.

Theoretically you can make a seed phrase by flipping a coin a hundred times! Jade would be easier than doing the maths yourself. You can make a multisig 2/3 on jade as well. Jade is open source and has been well vetted.

If you keep it from ever connecting to the internet and just buy a highly trusted and long running device, then the keys are generated entirely off your mobile. apps can very easily steal a key because its always connecting to some distant server somewhere. A hardware wallet, with a few basic considerations, is much easier to trust and use safely.
