Does #primal not allow the connection of a external lightning wallet?

No. Unfortunately, you need to use a NWC pairing code to connect to a Lightning backend. They've made things needlessly complex.

Something broke for me in amethyst about a month ago. Notes missing and taking forever to load notes
I'm an Amethyst refugee as well. It used to be a great little app but the reliability and bugs got worse by the day. Maybe the developer abandoned the project?
Primal doesn't really have a wallet. It can control an external wallet using NWC. They could've easily launched an external wallet on the same device, like the way Amethyst would launch Zeus, for example, when you wanted to zap. But instead, they did things the hard way and added needless complexity to promote that silly NWC scheme. Kind of disappointing.
