Today we learned that even WoT will be gamed bc of the immense gullibility of humans.

lol. today.

WoT is not a simple algorithm. Everyone's WoT is personally defined.

Whoever finds the fixture for human gullibility will be a legend in my book

I have a fix that I'm willing to sell. I just need your banking information.

Routing: 041213669

Account: 1311173353869

Run it

There is no fix. Humanity flawed.

Stop smoking the hopium and take responsibility for your social network.

It all boils down to self responsibility and ownership of your feed. Were all anon here, hell I'm a creepy sketch of a cartoon character and sleepy is a frog or so he claims. I vote for digital natural selection. Get scammed, learn and grow

πŸ˜‚

its a good thing to keep in mind when building these algos πŸ€”

In PGP the default is that a key is untrusted until you perform some explicit verification step

Which is why I still like PGP, despite its clunkiness.

I wonder what that verification step will look like in a WoT on Nostr

I guess we have to continue pointing the scammers out, for those who can’t figure it out πŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈπŸ™„

As annoying as it is, we are the first & last line of defense against them.

Please do point them out, I’m gullible. πŸ˜…

Some are obvious because of their patterns.

If/when I see one, I’ll point them out πŸ˜‚

πŸ˜‚ Oh Kay! Thank you.

Web of trust is stupid.

If you’re just figuring this out today, you’re probably gullible yourself.

It hasn’t yet been figured out, I can surely hope we have smart enough people to do the work necessary to make it work, I thought decentralized social media was stupid before nostr.

Currently web of trust just makes the big accounts bigger and does nothing to improve the quality of the network. It encourages people to follow more and get followed more.

Incentives will drive human behavior always.

The real issue with nostr is discoverability, and WoT is a fools errand on that front.

nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s would know more about it than me but I’m led to believe that WoT will help discoverability if done correctly

β€œIf done correctly”

There’s one right way and many wrong ways.

It’s More likely to just manipulate people.

what do we know if the right way will manipulate people, that sounds like a symptom of a bad implementation.

Many ways of doing it right, many ways of doing it wrong

Certainly there are more ways of doing it wrong, and that’s the path it’s going.

Developers working on doing things to manipulated users, instead of the things the users actually want them to do.

Most users don’t want spam so working on spam prevention seems to be aligned

Relays handle spam, the ability to control which relays you’re seeing and relating to controls spam. spam hasn’t been an issue for me for over a year now.

Grasping at straws to justify your own desires.

You don’t necessarily need to use WoT as a recommendation algorithm, its main use is determining trustworthiness when trying to fix gaming of things like zap, like, and follow feeds. I don’t see how this is β€œstupid”.

It’s stupid because people will use it as a social credit score and gaming of zaps, likes, and follow feeds is only an issue for people trying to derive metrics and don’t really matter to actual users.

Humans have been applying social scores for 200,000 years, I don't think that will change anytime soon

Yah, so let’s let some developer give us a number on a screen so we don’t have to think for ourselves anymore. Great idea.

That can be said of lots of tools invented by humans. Web of trust is another tool that can surface existing information in compressed form. It does not mandate any numbers on a screen, that is one implementation choice

It'l normalize over time, wot and other similar metrics should be robust to small changes like if someone follows a bot by accident or whatever.

Of bots are useful, they will have good trust (being followed but not following others). Dave is a useful bot, there are a few time chain bots that are useful.

if a bot is bad it will get buried from mutes.

in the middle has a similar score to newcomers, which should eventually classify as show or don't show in feed after a number of actions happen.

Now, malicious actors? Purposely inserting them in communities to sow division - yeah WOT can't protect against that. Only the strength of the community can hope to guard against that.

I hope our community learns to see these patterns more clearly in order to foster a more legitimate ecosystem.

Agree, though we do have decent starting conditions.

Top wot users are generally technically competent, and their effects on the scores of who they follow could be stronger

agreed, a practice I wish more people would do is scraping your following from time to time, take a second look at your following list, unfollow accounts that are inactive, accounts that switch names and personalities overnight etc

Hell, I'll go back to purging my watchlist.
