have you ever had issues with the pile being too wet for you device?
I mean is it waterproof?

Thanks. No trouble with moisture so far. I'm using this IP65 enclosure: https://www.adafruit.com/product/3931
The sensor has a ~2 foot long stainless steel probe, and the enclosure stays outside the pile on the top, with the pile covered to keep rain out.
