It may be a partially subconscious motivation, or the result of some willful ignorance, but I think there is a deep seeded fear & self loathing, & a desire for others to be as weak & powerless as many of them feel which makes up the real motivation. You could feel like you're on the same team as people working to protect your community by arming yourself. But instead their desires are always destructive: disarm the people, eat the rich, etc.
