One area that bothers me about the community and culture of the popular decentralised social networks is the lack of regard for youth. We should be making it enticing and safe for them to join these spaces and grow up with these values.

We see all of the reports of how Big Social is detrimental for youth emotional and mental health. We should be encouraging them in more ethical spaces #nostr #freedomtech

J/k 😂

lol nah it’s cool. I know they get flack for their stance on moderation but I think with a protocol such as this it works as it’s not really limiting nor harmful and it still offers those being youth or people in general that prefer moderation and curation a space on Nostr

I have two young children. My wife and I have been reading, “The Anxious Generation “. The book makes a compelling case that kids under 16 are actively being harmed by using smartphones and social media.

I think Nostr makes this better since there is not a company farming engagement, but the core of the problem comes from kids being on their devices more than interacting with other kids in real life.

I wonder if trying to setup safe places for kids on the internet is missing the point. We should be keeping them in the real world for as long as possible, especially while their brains are still developing.

I don’t think it’s missing the point as we are in a digital world. There’s no going back but as parents we can limit their screen time and encourage them to join sports, groups and other outside/physical and social activities. They would just sneak to be online anyway which is significantly more harmful. I think the combination is what I suggested earlier plus ethical social platforms
