Just watched Eastern Promises (2007) directed by David Cronenberg. His 12th movie and the second one in his crime/drama phase. It’s a Russian mob drama starring Viggo Mortensen. It’s interesting to see it chronologically with the rest of his work. There’s definitely a parallel to be made with the story of an History of violence: some things are not as they seem. All the murder scenes and even the baby in the beginning of the movie: all Cronenberg’s special effects skills. Vincent Cassel is excellent as the boss’s son. He has some funny lines like this one: “This man was like brother to me. Now he’s like ice cream” 😂

I really like this movie. Watched it a few times before.

Vincent Cassel knocked it out.

I have seen this movie a few times as well.

Cassel is a legendary actor. He plays the weak son perfectly. I haven’t seen a bad performance of his yet. His character also has a slightly gay vibe now that I think of it 😂

Cronenberg movies are gay 🤷🏻‍♂️

No bad performances

Has he been in anything recently?

Excellent movies still. Except for the 3 existential ones. Specially that one with the car crashes 😂

ExistenZ is great.

(Haven’t seen the ones after except Crimes of the future though)

Mesrine in 2008 and Black Swan (2010) are the last one of his I saw. I think he was in a few westworld episodes. I’m looking up his stuff there’s quite a few after that.

Black swan was the last one of his I saw him in

Mesrine was really good

I have not seen that

I haven't seen that one in a long time, probably since it released. My memory is hazy, but I remember a crazy bathhouse fight scene maybe?

Yep. That’s the one!

I remember it was good. I guess it's time for a rewatch 📽️

I like how the fight is not like in regular action movies where the hero wins easily without a scratch. This was a dirty fight. He barely makes it out alive

I forget the plot and specifics, but remember it making me feel uncomfortable 💯

Gritty realism.

Cronenberg is really good at that, the discomfort. That car crash movie. Terrible 😂

If you're looking for a feel good movie, no Cronenberg 💯😂

Indeed.

Good movies > feel good movies

Sometimes they’re the same. Not often

I like Aronofsky movies for the same reason. They evoke strong emotions, but not necessarily good ones.

He’s another great one. There’s quite a few of his I haven’t seen.

Mother! was incredible. Also very wtf is going on here. Constantly. Very stressful.

The fountain 🤌

Requiem For A Dream. Fuuuuck.

So intense man. Genuinely felt bad for the women (the mom and Connelly). Crackheads everywhere is crazy

Even the soundtrack is disturbing. Clint Mansell always does a great job, probably why Aronofsky teams up with him so much.

I remember the main theme. Disturbing indeed. Especially when tied in to that movie

The whale was something. Disturbing too but for different reasons. Very odd. A main character that I didn’t like but I empathized with him still

That's a sign of good writing I think.

Definitely

Great film maker

I was hooked from pi

Not sure I’ve seen that one. Requiem was the first one I saw. I remember feeling bad for the mom. And for Connelly. So intense. What a great movie

Fucked up movie. The fridge! 😂

I think pi was his first movie

Yes

Pi is intense and strange, but worth watching. All his films are worth it for some reason.

Yes.

I’ll download and tag them on to the festival 😂

4 left of Cronenberg, then Claire Denis movies, followed by the Cronenberg children movies 😂

Naked dudes fighting in a bathhouse is crazy

That’s another way of saying it

😂

😂

Viggo's race across the desert sands stuck w/me als'O' */* name - idk

Eastern Promises is one of my favorite movies.

Epic movie. So many one liners in there. “I died when I was fifteen. Now I live in the zone”

"They called me the stump."

“You have to kill the king in order to be the king”

Because “how I become king if the king still in place”

i hav a fe\/\/ {i}DEAz*/*ya n_n/*****'O'''

What a scene

The sequel is one of the most interesting topics on quora

Just read about this briefly. Didn’t know about this. Very interesting topic indeed

The bathhouse fight is epic / and sly in how it hides all the crotches haha

Hides all of them? Are we sure we’re talking about the same movie 🤭😂😂🫂

I love a history of violence, I’ll have to check this one out

I think you’ll enjoy it. Even better than history of violence in my opinion

Great pfp btw 🫡

I'll look at it, you've made me want to! Thanks!

But before turning them off we all install Nostr 🫨

Turning off?

Eastern Promises is that kind of film that is too good to become mainstream hit.

Yes the actors, yes the filmmaking, but also fckng YES to that Ural bike. 🤘🏻

Very cool bike indeed
