I'm going to be teaching a Nostr 101 at "Noob Day" during the Baltic Honeybadger Riga Bitcoin Week. What are some tips that you feel that every new Nostrich should know?
Discussion
Obviously show them lines of code and explain JSON and the ins and outs of public key cryptography 😂
Depending on your audience the ins and outs of cryptography can be overwhelming. A phrase that I found helped people understand the difference between a public and private key is:
"Don't expose your privates in public."
Obviously, can’t forget that bro
The difference between the npub and nsec when logging into clients and apps.
Absolutely
Setting up wallet access for apps that don't have it built in.
Also. I'll be there MF!
This is a big one.
i dont know but please stream your talk on zap.stream . serves as a good other stuff demo
The 0 - 100k sats custodial gap
Android = Minibits
ios = npub.cash
I think telling them about Cashu and nuts in the beginning stages is a huge turn off given there current state.
I personally feel the current stage of cashu is as good if not better than any custodial lightning wallet experience. It has amazing nostr product fit.
Cashu:
*Allows free immediate LN Address for nostr profile
*Allows immediate send/receieve zaps
*Nostr integration
*Better privacy
*No kyc
*Low fee
*Serves the same custodial 0-100k sat gap all no coiners face when onboarding to bitcoin from layer three down
What's the huge turn off?
You have to tell someone to still get another Lightning wallet otherwise you're setting them up for custodial failure. Telling someone to use two Lightning wallets to send and receive zaps is a bad user experience for the majority of the population.
Baby steps. I look forward to people migrating over because as great as bitcoin is, different communities and genres of content are what will attract more users of clients and then the loop feeds on itself.
Once these creators start getting zapped for content is when that dopamine hit of “Fuck me I just got paid in real time” happens and then it’s game on
Derek keep rocking and spreading the word
Agree. Some day we'll get there. Maybe with nostr:nprofile1qqs04xzt6ldm9qhs0ctw0t58kf4z57umjzmjg6jywu0seadwtqqc75spzpmhxue69uhnzdps9enrw73wd9hszynhwden5te0wp6hyurvv4cxzeewv4eszynhwden5te0wfjkccte9enrw73wd9hsxv8qkt and his nutsack. Who knows?
Thank you.
Android allows fuller nostr user experience. On Android Minibits lets you send and receive zaps from just minibits, also pay LN invoices. No second lightning wallet needed.
Yes on ios there is a sending zap issue but not a receiving zap issue with cashu. There are other sending zap issues on ios not cashu specific as well. ios users can dm sats with cashu. No second wallet needed.
Cashu wallets can pay LN invoices.
New users have to use a custodian LN wallet to start from 0-100k sats anyway so no different single custodial risk.
User's have to have over 100k sats for a self custodial LN channel no matter what.
That is when a second self custodial LN wallet comes into play.
why not normal WoS or primal lightning wallet ?
WoS requires vpn and have openly pulled from USA market. You get way better privacy on cashu and can send out of bound transactions. Single custodian that can censor you while cashu has to censor the whole mint. Cashu is deeply integrated into nostr and has incredible utility. Cashu is no kyc.
Primal is soft kyc strike backend with only small amounts and I believe the 30% apple tax. Need to tell users to lie on kyc.
cool can I receive cashu on primal or I have to switch to a cashu wallet only
I beleive the primal thing is just that the ecash token renders in a nice way instead of as the raw token string. Many other clients do that. You need a cashu wallet to redeem ecash. enuts is a good ios
minibits is the best on android
Tell 'em about #asknostr
Emphasize that nostr's the new internet, portable self-ownership of your information, and not merely the social media client you happen to like best.😃
Clients and miniapps interoperability and npub portability, using properly tools to preserve nsec 🍀💜🫂
Make sure to use a hashtag for the event that you share with us and we can zap the new Nostriches. What day and time will you be presenting? Time difference is 7 hours ahead of Eastern Time in USA. #Nostr
Will it be recorded for nostriches that cant make it to riga
An example of switching clients to show how your content and followers are tied to your nsec & showing how all these different clients are on nostr.
Nostr=internal combustion engine
Clients=cars that use it to run
How early Nostr is and therefore some things that are taken for granted in centralized social media isn’t here and what is here can change.
Diverse range of example Nostr accounts and hashtags to show it’s not all bitcoin and devs - we have yo-yos and bees too 😁
Brief intro to fediverse bridges just as a heads up for when they encounter those long alphanumeric addresses
Emphasizing the you-own-your-own-data aspect with many different examples. Such as in the non-Nostr world, there are blogs vs. tweets vs. FB posts. In the Nostr world, you are your data and you choose the client based on how you want to send your data out and how you want to look at other folks data. I know this is a given, but the more examples, especially visually, the better I think new folks can make the leap. It’s a big jump to go from unconsciously serving the corporations to deliberately deciding and taking consistent action to be your own boss.
Do a general internet search for Nostr to see what headlines/articles a non-Nostr person would see and yes/no-here’s-what-it-really-is to the articles’ talking points as you feel appropriate.
Thanks for all you do!!! 🫡
I would say setting up a lightning address to receive zaps. That’s a big one. Also show them how easy it is go swap clients. No passwords or email addresses needed!
private: NSEC
public: posts
nostr:npub1gzuushllat7pet0ccv9yuhygvc8ldeyhrgxuwg744dn5khnpk3gs3ea5ds did something similar for the Barcelona Bitcoin Only community.
He could share his slides, super high quality!
Would have gone for opportunity but plan to be in Greenland. 🇬🇱
Explain to them what the validation process is and how it works. I had a rough onboarding experience.
