Did it, full gangster mode haha

Even here there is shit like asking for phone numbers, but the ladies at Bangkok Gold managed to solve the problem, quite likely some random dude who has not been here in ages now has sold 2 ounces of gold :-)

Didn’t even ask for that, and also not that they had it in them haha!

Would have gone to the one I use that never asks for anything, but with rain pouring & a glazed over spark plug from that… Well full unruly gangster on the roads too haha

Is KYC a legal requirement to buy and sell precious metals there?

Technically yes, but super easy to spoof or avoid :-)

Bought half an ounce back at the new store right outside of the compound, it’s likely the first time they’ve sold to a Westerner, no questions asked at all hehe

Fascinating. Gold trading must be pretty popular there if the authorities are mandating KYC.

Are folks using the gold as its own sort of currency or something?

It’s real money here, and the KYC is very loose and more or less optional if you shop around a bit ;-)

Actually this economy would revert back to a gold standard & keep going that way if the internet disappeared, also I feel that this half-integration of gold somehow keeps the local currency in line, it’s more stable than it could have been.

There are plans to print a lot and ramp up tax theft of course, but not so sure that this will happen as planned, normally these types of schemes won’t work as planned…

How #Bitcoin changes things within all of this remains to be seen, my guess is that it will play well along with gold, the very healthy informal economy and then the geopolitical changes we experience now that the dollar is finally dying
