As shown in the screenshot, Simplex is issuing a token primarily to address two issues:

1. Simplex servers currently have no revenue, which makes them unsustainable and gives no incentive for more people to operate more servers.

2. Providing short, memorable names (which would then require global consensus?).

For the first issue, an ecash sat “stamp” mechanism is simple and straightforward.

If users worry that an ecash mint might run off with funds, consider having the same operator run both the Nostr relay and the Cashu mint. Each time, users buy 32 stamps with 32 sats—just like purchasing stamps at a post office.

For the second issue, we still don’t understand why this would be a problem for a secure, privacy-preserving chat app.

They're copying the Session app model

🙈

Does this not undo the whole advantage of SimpleX?

Why don't they just make it easier for any Joe to run his own server?

It’s sad.

I run my own on start9. Are they taking away self-hosting? I just use it for notes between devices at the moment.

Y'all are doing good work 🤙

I doubt integrating ecash at this early stage does Keychat any favour. It's a pet project for now. Not something I would want to have close my private and ideally anonymous conversations.

Maybe I don't know enough how you use it. Might want to go into more details?

When the Keychat wallet has a balance, Keychat will request 32 ecash tokens of 1 sat each from the Cashu mint. These are what we call digital stamps. A digital stamp is simply a piece of data, since ecash tokens are bearer tokens.

When a user sends a message, the digital stamp is automatically appended to ["EVENT", , "cashu string"]. When the relay receives the message, it redeems the digital stamp.

They solved the issue of increasing costs that they cannot cover... Since now they will lose most of their users 😅
