It’s sad to see Simplex fall into the tempting smart-contract blockchain token trap.

This is also why Keychat uses ecash sats as postage stamps for messages.

At this point I’m skeptical of anyone or any company that is more active on twitter than NOSTR.

Truth

Looks like I'll be moving secure comes elsewhere...

So read the website for more information but yeah I tried to tell them this wasn't good but they don't care. The only thing that cares is it offers L2 protocol which ensures anonymous payments. Whatever bs explanation. It's all to ensure their own vouchers can be used only on simplex between server operators.

Building a FOSS chat app isn’t easy — it takes a ton of time, effort, and resources. Simplex probably went down that token route just to cover costs.

Keychat, on the other hand, is trying something interesting — using ecash sats as postage stamps for messages.

And then there’s 0xchat & XChat — we don’t have any monetization model, but we’ve been lucky to get steady grant support from nostr:nprofile1qythwumn8ghj7ct5d3shxtnwdaehgu3wd3skuep0qyt8wumn8ghj7etyv4hzumn0wd68ytnvv9hxgtcqypu8xwr40lp96ewdj2fef408wy70gd3carf9n6xu7hrnhq6whpgly925h0z , which helps us keep building and moving forward.

None of them are solved with another token... 😂

Like, you could just make your own secure server. Why blockchain? Oh "decentralized"

The only thing in crypto that is really decentralized is Bitcoin. Everything else is unnecessary. And Bitcoin is terrible to use for arbitrary data. It's slow AF. And you need external software to even index it in the first place and it's terribly expensive. So they go oh well we can make a blockchain that is better in all those areas. Then you lose the decentralization. So there's no point to a blockchain. You're literally just adding a while host of complexity that has as much security as your own internal centralized server anyways. Any thought at all from a first principal perspective would exemplify this. So the choices are 9/10 they're just going to rug their coins slowly to zero and make money doing it and go away. Or 1/10 they're just dumb and didn't think about this logically

10/10 chances it will end the company and the protocol within a decade.

I'm trying to find the sha256sum file for the releases on your github. Could you point me to where I can find them please?

Maybe it doesn't show up on phone?

Oh, excellent! I wasn't looking there. I just looked for a file. Thank you!

And thank you for making a desktop version (linux). I rarely use phones.

By the way, the Linux version of Keychat doesn’t have the Browser feature yet.

The chat feature is what I find the most important right now.

Thank you for all your work!

Might as well call it FedX

I wonder if nostr:nprofile1qqsvnx99ww0sfall7gpv2jtz4ftc9v6wevgdd7g4hh7awkpfvwlezugppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0jwtjpy looked into RBG, if it could help with this.

Very good idea

heads-up: we looked for a lightning address on your profile but could not find one... u can get a free one at https://rizful.com ... and then reply back to this comment so we can zap you.

Wow. Bummer

Mind saying it more slowly for those of us in the back? Why does ecash as postage make for a more sustainable model.

Big fan by the way. I use Keychat daily.

Thank you. Are you looking to explore why users choose paid services when "free services" are available?

I didn't even think about the revenue model. I had, perhaps erroneously, presumed their decision was based on simplicity of build that would save time and capital.

If you're charging per message, or a portion of each zap I make, great, all the power to you. I only paid attention to the fact Nostr PWA's/sites just work better in Keychat. And most importantly, Keychat has the most functional nsec signer out. I feel safer exploring vibe coded apps and not worrying about whether they're slop that'll lose my keys.

In the offline world, most business models are pay-per-use. In a spontaneously ordered market, demand for goods and services spurs the emergence of supply.

Ethereum foundation has deep pockets

How serious are we all about protocols?🤔🧐❔

I think we all need to look into, and support, the development of Reticulum, which,--if I'm understanding it correctly--would replace the base layer, the TCP-IP layer, of the global internet, with a real, private, anonymous, encrypted base layer that INTENTIONALLY is the internet that we all know that we want...

Its talked about a decent amount here, but its so early that its not been integrated

This is demonstrably wrong. Ethereum, for example, had a 70% pre-mine that went into the pockets of the very few. That's the opposite of neutral and incredibly immoral.

Pre mine me harder Daddy

Very inaccurate analogy

100% premine.

nostr:nprofile1qqsvnx99ww0sfall7gpv2jtz4ftc9v6wevgdd7g4hh7awkpfvwlezugpzdmhxue69uhhqatjwpkx2urpvuhx2ue0chkv5c goodbye 👋🏻

Wait….how come?!

They're heading down the tokenisation route

Ffs…will look into this…once/if verified that will be that 🤷🏻‍♂️ #HopingforaHoax 🤞

They've announced it on their X feed.

And it's not even that difficult to build good bitcoin support into a chat app. I'm a relative noob to privacy tech and - thanks to good existing libraries and AI assistance - I was able to make a chat app with a cashu wallet built-in, using the MDK (Marmot Development Kit) for MLS chat. I don't expect to continue on my project, it was just a fun project to get to know the libraries, and to learn how things like push notifications work and to learn more about MLS.

I hadn't heard of Keychat, I'll check it out now!

a shitcoin value is inversely proportional to the amount of bullshit required to sell it

Why are they posting that on twitter and not on nostr? That makes sense now

Take a look of this nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7etyv4hzumn0wd68ytnvv9hxgqgdwaehxw309ahx7uewd3hkcqpqkejanqd5kjlzffzrlhrf9tfwnmptkhrnwuu6euwaqjhhagm8l2xqv884cz

"The funniest thing is that all those who are criticizing Simple X chat, still use WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, X, or Instagram as their everyday messaging app. At most, some use Signal, and many don't even know that Simple X chat exists."

😎🎃⚡️🥷

Totally different UX. It doesn't offer convenience like any of the others mentioned

Yes. It offers

That's sad

Why nostr:nprofile1qqsvnx99ww0sfall7gpv2jtz4ftc9v6wevgdd7g4hh7awkpfvwlezugpz4mhxue69uhkummnw3ezummcw3ezuer9wchsx06t26? I'm desapointed. 😕

And nothing was comunicated for us on Nostr. It's very sad you don't hear our opinion here.

I’ve recently become interested in Nostr relays that can accept ecash on a per note basis so that relays can get paid while users can send notes from randomly generated keys… are you guys running a relay that accepts ecash? Have you written anything about that? I looked at the github docs but didn’t see anything mentioned there about the Nostr relay used

We should have documented this sooner; we’ll add docs next. Keychat relays collect digital stamps and differ from regular Nostr in two respects: 1) they state their fee rate, and 2) they can convert received digital stamps into a wallet.

For #2, are you referring to a wallet that the relay controls, basically that this is how the relay gets paid? Or do you mean a user’s wallet?

Also, do you know any other Nostr clients that are doing ecash postage stamps? I’m still catching up in the space :)

I mean the relay collects digital stamps into its own wallet.

When the Keychat wallet has a balance, Keychat will request 32 ecash tokens of 1 sat each from the Cashu mint. These are what we call digital stamps. A digital stamp is simply a piece of data, since ecash tokens are bearer tokens.

When a user sends a message, the digital stamp is automatically appended to message. When the relay receives the message, it redeems the digital stamp.

At the moment, we’re the only ones advocating for and using digital stamps.

So so helpful - so far this seems like the winning approach. I’ve been advocating for sub milli sat ecash denominations to support this kind of use case. 🙏

This is very disappointing to see. Looks like the opposite of growth. And for the record I don’t want SimpleX relays. I thought the point was for people to ultimately run their own.

They’re trying to scale? For what? “Somebody has to pay for it”. This is not a social media app. I thought it was for personal and group secure messaging that doesn’t fall apart when AWS or their farms get hit by a DoS. I didn’t want to use your servers in the first place, but understand the need for PoC.

Maybe it’s on me for misinterpreting. I guess I was hoping this was about decentralization for as much as that word appears in this recent sales pitch. It appears to be about creating a sustainable business model for them to host.

Was definitely one of my favorite designs. 😔 Please help me understand if I’m missing something here. Possible I misinterpreted the project from the start.

disappointed asfk

Not using it anyway.
