Used to be a huge fan, but I’ve been liking Proton a lot less lately. They offer all of these half-finished products, and now are trying to shove their garbage AI product down users’ throats. They literally said in their announcement letter, “AI is here, whether we like it or not.” Their whole mentality has shifted. They seem shady now.
Since I started learning and using Linux, I’ve been self-hosting more and more. If there’s an app to host email, contacts, and calendar, I’d drop Proton in a heartbeat.
With how shoddy the VPN has been over the last year or so (especially now that both mobile apps are equally shitty with enshitification and feature reduction) amongst other Proton blunders, 2025 looks to be the last year I'm a paying user; just the VPN alone is enough to push me to adopt the UNIX philosophy towards other services, where I use one good product for one purpose.
The filter and folder system I have set up (identical to the former/current(?) Gmail smart categories) is the only reason to justify continued payment, and even THAT barely works anymore.
