If 25 million people migrated to NOSTR today and immediately started running active accounts, could the network handle this with no issues?

We would truly need to decentralize with relays instead of all using the top 40.

Thx Derek. Makes sense.

We need to use other ones besides the "top ones" and we need clients to change how they utilize relays. Will is working on this with Damus and it will help with decentralization.

We’ve learned a lot of lessons though. Even my stupid ass could manage to spin up mirror relays now.

We’re in a better spot for this than three months ago to be sure!

There is no way the current network could even handle 1 million new users. There has been very little focus on robust relays. Small relays run by hobbyists cannot scale the way that is needed to add large numbers of users. Cameri has one of the original relays and is shutting it down because he can't make ends meet. It would be wise for everyone to pitch in and help a few people build more robust relays. I am happy to invest a small amount to scale some relays. Currently it seems like NOSTR.band and maybe Wine are the only very robust relays. #relays #grownostr

That's why Nostr will fail at scalability, just like Bitcoin or the Internet has failed and continues to fail at scalability. Shoutout to Andreas Antonopoulos.

What does Andreas have to do with this issue?

I just read the last part of his book "internet of money". He talkes about the scaling problem of bitcoin and references to the scaling problem of the early internet.

Most people are not able to imagine how to solve problems. That's why, people kept saying, it won't work. This goes for cars, internet, Bitcoin and Nostr. Today, most people feel, cars will stay. Even the internet might stay. For bitcoin or nostr, most people out there need some more years to see what's going on.

Say what?

What

No.

“No issues” is unattainable. Google has issues. Twatter has issues. 25 million people in the same place will always cause issues.

It everyone supported paid relays we’d have more relays and more room to scale. The good news is that we’re nowhere close to having that number of users joining all at once.

It's a chicken and egg problem. Everyone using paid relays now doesn't need another one. So no need for more paid relays if the number of users stagnates. More user, more paid relays, if the users care for their feed. There should be a greater focus on relays. Make relays fancy again!

I could handle 100k CCU probably. But in a few hours I could do 500k or more

Of course it wouldn't. Just like if 25million people suddenly received an electric car overnight neither the grid nor the charging network would be able to handle it. Scaling takes time and adoption doesn't expand in an instant.
