at the very least we should be able to acknowledge a reaction.

because as it works currently we essentially leave a person trying to high five us hanging 100% of the time.

there should also be a specific "acknowledge read" reaction that is free from any kind of emotion.

Reactions can be any single unicode character I think. So whatever character you think means "acknowledge read" could easily fulfill that.

As for reacting to reactions, I don't think the protocol forbids that. I'm not sure what the UI/UX would look like.
