Periodic reminder that if you are using Umbrel, you should consider changing to a more sovereign node that is open source such as Raspiblitz or Raspibolt.

At the very least, if you don't know what your doing at the command line, find someone who can provide you support when stuff goes awry.

My only other one is EmbassyOS 😁no raspi but I could 🤔

EmbassyOS is also not open source

Yess, been scolded by Kortik bcuz of this once before. I guess I'll have to mame the move one day once I get there

I suppose that many/most who do are not too knowledgeable at the CLI level. Do you have reason to suspect malware or malintent on the part of Umbrel?

Nothing intentional. And it's been over a year since their major security incident.

But often seeing people have issues with LND in that setup. Without people having familiarity of the command line and docker it makes diagnosis a challenge.

Lightning nodes are not for the untechnical

Couldn't agree more.

If you want to run it local, then need to understand how it works and is configured.

Otherwise should probably run Lightning with a service provider like Voltage.

Agreed. Pretty sure I've lost all the sats I put on my umbrel node. Had a bad shutdown and now I can't get back into umbrel at all

Do you have a channel backup file saved somewhere? I would try setting up another new (separarate) umbrel node and loading that channel backup file and see what happens.

🤷 nope don't think so

People need to learn the hard way with these things.

Alternatively they could start with testing environments, learning how to read the source code to understand what they are running and more importantly, the risks they take with hot wallets and how to keep their node as secure as possible.

Running code that isn’t open-source is only one issue.

I started with umbrel, but when I realized their primary support was a 14-yr old who left their company, I switched to different software back in 2020.

That's the heart of the problem. There's no support, and Umbrels primary mission is delivering on quantity over quality.
