Probably if you looked into every culture you would see this in some variant long long ago. Dowries for example.

Yeah, everyone did it. Some still do.

Seems to be most popular among poorer men because they have so little to offer.

If you raped or abducted a woman, you could be ordered to pay the bride price (bridal-dowry) as damages.

And men who can't afford the price would just steal a woman or pay a lesser sum to a trafficker.
