I draw a pretty hard distinction like between:

- people deciding to voluntarily organize into "echo chambers"

- platforms either doing this *for you*, or simply not allowing certain discourse

But good LW links either way! I do need a refresher.

I agree it is an important difference morally. If you are an outsider who doesn't buy into the cult in question functionally it is the same.

I never used xitter, threads, bsky, or mastodon for a mix of both reasons.
