That's not a sketch, is it?

I mean that's the reverse of envy, it should do to your heart what envy does.

Could you please explain further what you mean? I’m struggling to understand your point.

Envy is when someone wants what others have. The envious wish that the fortunate didn't have it, and wish that they'd have it instead. It'd build resentment and arrogance in the heart. Resentment that the fortunate got what that the envious wanted, and arrogance for thinking they deserve what the fortunate have.

Similarly, the kind of people in the video would resent the less fortunate if they show any contentment with their life. It would also fill them with arrogance of thinking they've earned what they got and that they'll never lose it.

Same results, different ways to reach there.

Hmm 🤔

I don’t think there was anything mentioned or indicated in the video that the poorer person wished the richer person didn’t have X…they just said “how is it good that some have and others don’t”.

Yes, envy is bad. We call it ‘hasad’ in Arabic, and the definition is:

“To see others with something you don’t have and wish they didn’t have it”

That is a major sin in Islam. So on that point, agreed.

But let’s look at a scenario, if you can understand what my perspective was.

Two neighbours. Each own their own house, and neither of them has ‘house insurance’. Lightning strikes one house, sets it on fire 🔥 and it burns to the ground. The other survived.

It is ‘good’ that both houses weren’t burnt down, but it wasn’t good for the person whose house is now gone. One doesn’t need to have envy for the house to survive to think that their situation isn’t good.

This is why, it’s understandable in healthy communities, for ppl to pull together to help those who things didn’t work out for them. But to say “well, I survived so it’s good, as for you, then you can deal with that” this is what I’m talking about.

We have two extremes and we have a middle. The middle being, we have collective responsibility for each other. Those that have should help for those who don’t. We all understand that. Sometimes that responsibility is more due to additional ties, like family ties; neighbour ties, national ties, proximity ties and so on, but we can’t ignore that reality, which I feel many in the west, do.
