I kinda have a love/hate relationships with vpns. Or maybe I don’t understand that enough.

I mean, you send all your internet info through “one” server of a service? Is that so safe?

You're shifting where you want your exit to be (ISP or controlled VPN provider) and what info they see as a result. Also practical for tunnel when on public wifi

If the ISP cuts off internet access to your phone would you need a VPN to use local wifi?

You dont generally need to use VPN but its recommended for some privacy control.
