Any recommendations and what hardware and software I should buy or use to start running my own Bitcoin node?

I was thinking a raspberry pi4-8GB. 32GB SD card. 2TB hard drive and Umbrel?

I like

Lenovo or Hp mini PCs (ebay $25) *Bare* with power adapter

7500T cpu (ebay $30)

16GB ddr4 *dual channel* 2x8gb ram (new $25)

2TB Sata SSD (new $80-$100)

Total $160-$180

Powerful x86 with huge RAM and 2TB storage enough for another decade of full archival.

Ok thanks! I'll have a look. And should I use Umbrel or something else?

I’ve used raspiblitz and Start9, never umbrel personally, BTC sessions covered it I think.

Start9 (StartOS open source)

https://github.com/Start9Labs/start-os

https://docs.start9.com/0.3.5.x/

It’s good, just keep in mind you’ll need to connect to everything over Tor so for example Nunchuk wallet on mobile doesn’t connect over tor by default, you’ll need a tor proxy like Orbot- which is doable but I hope Nunchuk supports this inside the app in future.

Blockstream Green should work fine, and the Keeper wallet does too I believe, was going to test Keeper this weekend

Raspiblitz is great and more lightweight if you decide to go with a pi

https://github.com/raspiblitz/raspiblitz

Ok, I'll do some more research on these. Thanks 🫂

Whatever you decide it’s best to jump in with anything you got and learn!

Start with Bitcoin core pruned on your personal computer!

https://youtu.be/vEWl6sXLpAU

Always can upgrade or run multiple in future, give equipment to family as gifts!

Don’t trust…. verify! (On your own node)

🫡✌️

Idk too much about this but I did do a quick deep dive before getting into it, I’m on like day 4 of downloading btc core.

I’m using an old MacBook that I had laying around with a 2Tb ssd. I wanted to keep costs down and when the things fried I’ll just chuck it and get something else.

I saw a lot of recommendations for using mini pcs, and that’s exactly what I’ll do once my laptop dies. You can get them for cheap used, newer models have better power efficiency and way more computational power for. You’ll always have a back up PC too if worst comes to worst.

Dell OptiPlex seems to be the most popular

For the $*

Ok, thanks for the recommendation. The mini pc's look like the way to go.

I wrote that comment up like right when you made the post and then saw 2 other comments saying the same thing by the time I had it posted 😂

From a use case perspective it seems like it’s just the useful play. I don’t think you can go wrong if you take this route

The x86 Intel 7500t will be 4-5x faster than the ARM pi4 chip

Power use

Intel 7500T

5-10watts idle 30watts load

Pi4

1-3 idle, 6-7 load

Rather have the power in my opinion

Ok, true

Pi is less recommended these days. Snag a Beelink NUC with an n200 and 16gb RAM, throw a 1-2TB SSD in it and you’re cooking with room to spare.

Thanks man! I'll do some research and compare it with other recommendations.

Can't zap you..

Thanks for the heads up I’ll fix it tonight after work!

Let me know when it's fixed

should be up. not sure why the container exited, still working on perfecting my own setup haha

I am following this conplete guide. Didn't finish but so far so good.

Already watched it, but thanks 🫂

I think you can start with something basic, in my case I was trying to save money for buy rig for mining and have it on my own house in a specific room, after having the rigs I should start from the very basic, maybe two or three miners, after a month what I generate with them I just upgrade the rigs or buy more miners, idk if this help you but I hope it so! 🤞🏻

I think something got lost in translation 😅 was asking about running a node and not about mining.. but I think I have an idea on what to get. Thanks for taking the time to reply 😁

they are not connected? I was thinking that! that's why I said about mining! I'm sorry for the confusion my friend, but if I give you ideas I feel happy with that! ☺️

No problem. Maybe check the differences between mining and running a node 💪

I'll do it! thank you for reading me even if I say something different! 💓

We're all here to learn. I'm also still such a noob in all these things 😅

I run a pi5, 8gb, 32gb sd just to boot and currently have a 1TB NVME base and a small touch screen

I run raspiblitz which I was regretting but it just got albyhub so it’s catching up to umbrel in terms of apps

It lets me run public pool and point my bitaxe to my own node.

Umbrel is much more plug and play. Raspibliz more tinkering

I have close friends who run umbrel with no issues

Ok. Seems like I will give Umbrel a shot. Thanks for the info 💪

That works 👌

My first node was installed many months ago, very easily, with Umbrel on a Raspberry Pi5 8Gb, SD Sandisk 64Gb (not so much storage needed for OS) and SSD Crucial 2Tb NVME. It's working great and I discharged blockchain in less than twelve hours.

I'm thinking about to install in the future a second one with Start9 on a MiniPC. That is really a very good option too.

Great! Thanks for the info! I'm still doing some learning and figuring out what is available..

I don’t know , i don’t like buying any hardware or software .

I am trying to create my own lighting wallet. Using node LDK , have not time to get into it.

Why do you need rasp p14-8gb 32 gb SD card ?

Umbrell cool but expensive .

Yeah, I still need to do some research 😅 what's LDK?

It’s lightning development kit

Ok. Yeah, I'm still such a noob 😅

Yes that is perfect, I have the same. SD card can be even smaller.

Skip the pi. Get a used second hand machine via ebay or another refurb/used hardware store.

Already went with the pi 😅 but thanks anyway fren

would recommend rpi5, more ram, is generally faster

Went with rpi5 😁
