I asked some friends around me why they did not continue to use #Damus . Many people reported that when they first registered and joined, they saw a screen full of spam advertisements, and they never used Damus again.
Now many new users will be scared away by spam and pornographic advertisements when they come in. The default free rlays are all these spam advertisements,.

I suspect having an on-ramp to a lightly filtered relay as a new user, while initially reminiscent of services they may be leaving, would help adoption. An opportunity for someone, perhaps.
“Wild West” Nostr could be a secondary exploration. Before I figured out filtering on the Universal feed it had become practically useless.
Agreed, new users who just came in saw a screen full of spam and thought they were entering a bad porn site, friends introduced Damus to others, "That's an app full of spam," they asked me how I was still in Damus, I said the app still had 10,000 DAU, they were surprised.

Yes! Hit the filter icon, top right, then turn off/on individual relays. In this example, I’ve cut the feed back to just a couple of paid relays and it’s made a huge difference. Damus TestFlight, but I believe this is in the App Store version also.
1. Client agnostic:
- use all paid relays
- use filter.nostr.wine relay to aggregate events of your follows and their follows from the public relays
2. If your client allows it turn off just the public relays in the universal feed or
3. Find free relays that do some spam filtering like nos.mom and use above two steps.
It’s just the global. You have to support them to get their home feed populated. They need to follow a few hundred good accounts, then they are all set

In the latest iOS release of Damus you can turn on or off the relays that display notes in the global feed which is a great way to reduce or eliminate spam in your global feed. Simply open the Damus app, click the magnify glass icon at the bottom. On the global feed screen click the three lines in the upper right and select which relays you would like to display info in the global feed.

I use Nostr.wine paid relay with the Filter. No porn or spam in Global….

The iris and snotr solutions can be learned from: When a new user signs up, #Damus suggests a list of high quality accounts. New users follow these high quality accounts, and the global posts in the search are posts that are displayed based on the 3 degrees of contacts of these high quality accounts. That way, you won't see spam or porn ads when you search the globe, making the experience much friendlier for new users.

I imagine a slider on the mobile app listing page. See too much, slide to the left, see not enough: slide to the right. There could also be a question on app setup for the default value.

Why not relays charge a minimum fee for each user activity?
What about a nip that will define many nostr protocol functions in the context of the price (money is PoW), relay will inform how much users pay for what and user can decide how to filter/sort other users/posts according to account fee, n05 id fee, per msg fee etc. Client would have their default filter/sort as well.
The major question is how to adapt a mobile client to it. Phones and batteries aren't currently going to support enough work to do it like that. Phone users will have to buy work, which is basically the same as 'paid' relays.
I think #[4] 's focus on paid relays is due to his focus on the phone app.
