i was thinking exactly the same, creating a e-mail gateway like npubXXXXXXX@mailgw.com where mails sent to this gw are a private msg to the npub holder. Also the other way around a priv message sent to npubXXXX creates a mail to the specified public mail XYC@gmail.com....

nip05 is associated with a domain, we do NOT need domains. Domains are centrally controlled by govs.
so are ip addressees
thats why encryption exists... so no one sees the content of the transmission. BUT with domains its so easy to target someone, you see more domains taken down than internet connections turned off. that says it all....

relays have domains too
It's a separate project
1. start with a TLD that no one uses
2. build up a decentralized domain name system that checkpoints to bitcoin
3. Make it very easy for people to access it using the legacy domain name system
4. Make it very easy for people to upgrade their DNS to use it
5. watch as it goes nowhere, just like namecoin
this might change with nostr after it has the first 100m Users... before that no one will care as the userbase is too small.
