Obviously you wouldnt do it via merchants you dont know or who can't be vouched for by someone you trust. That goes for anything in life though. You dont actually have real protections for anything and all of life is a risk. It is impossible to form relationships without risking betrayal.
People do it, and it works. I know its hard to understand for one of us who has been propagandized from birth to believe that social taboo shouldn't exist, who grew up in an environment where all the rules are formal and written in legalese, but in cultures with social expectations of conduct, there are incentives to not fuck people over beyond the possibility of being indicted by a grand jury. In non shameless societies, reputation matters.

The fact that westerners look for legalese loopholes in everything they do stems from this fact. A society where some rules are social custom and not sanctioned or banned by the state leads to a high trust society. You dont understand trust because you live in a low trust society, if its not in an act of congress you can do it and theres nothing wrong with it, thats how it is, thats what you need to change to have what you want.
All these cultures you hate, you can hate them. But you need to understand them for various reasons. Know your enemy, why are they insular but your people, no matter how you try, are not, what do they have that your people once had, or that your people need to have to survive, all these answers come from open understanding. You dont have to love something to study it. Just because you find the majority of some way of life disgusting doesnt mean there aren't things it can teach you.
Somalis for example. Ones in the US live in a society where homosexuality is legal. But they dont have open homosexuality, why?
