5 year old Refurbished Thinkpad... Yea or nay?
Discussion
I would suggest not buying something that old made of silicon, as silicon technology improves rapidly due to Moore's Law. My recommendation would be to purchase something that is more recent with decent specs.
Gonna need more information than that
Currently looking at a refurbished Thinkpad t490. 16gb of ddr4 and an 8th gen i5. Sounds decent on paper but hesitant to pull the trigger
You can upgrade the ram in those and storage with a M.2 but levono made it unnecessarily difficult to do unlike the older models. Caveat emptor but if you can find a cheap one go for it. Just depends on what you’re going to use it for.
I was trying to grab a W520 for dirt cheap but got sniped. If you are ok with a desktop they sell old business SFF towers for less than $80 all day long and easy to upgrade with used parts off eBay.
Yeah absolutely, the reason ThinkPads are so appealing is the upgradeability. I have a decent desktop already, so I'm probably going to grab a cheap t480 or 90! It's just going to be used for web development and college work so something older should do the job
The old IBMish ones were awesome, levono has slowly killed off everything good about the brand. Maybe look for a different brand and check to make sure they didn’t solder the RAM in so you can’t upgrade.
Examples of towers I was talking about

I always smile when I see that you’re using Nostr. I’ll be glad when BlueSky has Android so you can be there if you want to 🕊️
Always happy to be here, this place is so peaceful 💜 Definitely looking forward to that day!
how you like it?
It’s a very SF vibe right now 💙 I do like it though and am curious what’ll occur when the 1M waitlist is in. Nice team
