I use Lightning every single day, but I don’t know enough about it.

I know the basics. But when it comes to custody, running your own Lightning node… I have questions.

Is it a de-facto hot wallet? Does it have a seed phrase that can be airgapped? Or does that seed (like in Zeus or Phoenix) simply control the on-chain UTXO that was used to open the channel?

If anyone could point me toward educational resources, I’d appreciate it! #asknostr

It is 100% a hot wallet, and don't even need a seed to spend funds, just a macaroon

Thanks friend! Now to learn what a macaroon is. Sounds yummy and french

I don't really know about other resources, but if you want to learn the technical nuts and bolts, Mastering Lightning is a pretty good book.

To answer your question, yes it is a hot wallet if you're running a node. As far as I'm aware, there's no real way to air gap your seed and the seeds work a little bit differently depending on the implementation of lightening you're using. You can't just pop in your seed and regain your channels for instance, you also need a channel state file to to restore channels.

This helps - thanks!

Always appreciate a good Bitcoin book rec

Lightning labs and Voltage both have some great intro material on their websites.

Thanks! Will check both out
