Take a string on the globe. Japan to St Louis. Great circle route probably goes right over or very near Alaska..

Anchorage a hub for a lot of air cargo as a result..

A couple of years ago I had one bounce through NJ, Ohio and Puerto Rico (in that order) on its way to St Kitts. Yours makes way more sense.
