UK Vehicle Tax is Theft.

or better

UK Vehicle Tax is a Mafia-State Protection Racket.

"Tax it or lose it. We can always spot an untaxed car" envelope threat.

"Tax it or we'll clamp it" threat made in the public square.

"Untaxed vehicle" sticker of shame.

Might as well send the heavies round yelling "pay up or else".

This is just hostile provocation and a reminder that, as with the monthly property tax, we are not allowed to really own anything ourselves in this 'western liberal democracy'. It's one of a million reasons why normal quiet law-abiding citizens end up hating their governments to the point of buying, using, and supporting #bitcoin as much as humanly possible!

I do get the basis for doing this to *uninsured* vehicles, since third parties should not be asked to assume risk for my actions on the road. I also get the basis for enforcing a yearly 'fit for purpose' test on my vehicle, since bald tyres, faulty brakes, and broken lights ought to be fixed within a year by responsible individuals. However, I can't see how the so-called vehicle tax fits into this category, other than being another way of robbing people and reminding them of their subjugation to the system that they, for the most part, have to depend on.

It stinks.

We have another car for which the tax rate is zero, as it's super low emission or something.

However, we still have to go online each year and perform the submission ritual, under the same overhanging threat, thereby legitimsing the system for others even if there's nothing to pay on this vehicle.

It stinks.
