Thoughts on AI generated art.
An artist’s perspective.
There’s a lot of chatter and even panic in creative communities lately about what effect AI generated art such as that created by MidJourney will have on art as a profession.
I’ve pondered the subject a lot and have even tried it myself, to see if the program could produce what was in my mind. I was somewhat disappointed as I couldn’t seem to prompt it to do what I wanted it to, but the results were interesting none the less.
I wondered whether I could use it just for inspiration or to create references that I could paint. But I came to the resolution that I won’t use AI art programs for any of my work, simply because I believe it could effect my natural creativity, leading me to become creativity lazy.
I theorise that what will happen to upcoming generations is that we will see a decline in natural creative abilities because as they say, use it or lose it.
Creativity can be seen as a muscle that needs to be flexed, and it could in fact have a positive impact on more traditional forms of art such as painting, because it may become something people do less of, so true art collectors will be in search of more authentic works created by real humans.
However for illustrators and digital artists I believe it will probably have a bad impact on the amount of work available for them.
