Necessary, but often put in an impossible position... They are the front line maintaining a corrupt system and also somehow responsible for being social workers at times.

The position seems to draw in a lot of people who were either bullies in childhood or were severely bullied themselves. That comes across as a power trip a lot of times, but most cops are good people. Caught in the same traumatizing mess as the rest of society.
