Some of them require minimal speed from pedal or glide and supplement instead of going from a dead stop.

maybe i can hack it somehow to lower that threshold because it's too high
i remember this with electric scooters too, you have to kick off to start them moving, was only like 5km/h but this thing doesn't seem to kick in until like 8-10, and it pushes too hard, and it makes me nervous that it's gonna disrupt my estimation of when to cross traffic
If you’re concerned about such things, also be aware that if you modify it to engage immediately, it will not be legal on some trails. Because it digs up the trail that volunteers maintain. 
i live in an extremely hilly landscape, and the bike is a folder and almost every joint can't take excessive force without potentially risking damage or an injury - and not to mention its tires are street tires and it already makes enough clunk noises to make me nervous as it is, i'm not going offroad on this thing except in an emergency
Oh, those folding bikes are so cool. I totally want one of those.
