It was even well studied by ExxonMobil scientists who were financially incentivised to keep it quiet, in the 1970s and 80s, well before this became a popular narrative.

Consensus should have nothing to do with science, it's like a distributed system having a consensus about the time. Ever heard of the Time Warp Attack? This is a form of exploit against a time consensus, caused by a vulnerability in the network time consensus. This is why Bitcoin doesn't have one, it just allows a couple of hours difference, and it can indeed allow non-monotonic timestamps on blocks. I personally think it will eventually be exploited.
