Giana Sisters is better than Super Mario Bros. The soundtrack is better too.

I was one of the few kids who owned a C64 instead of an NES. For a good portion of my life, Giana Sisters were my Mario Bros.

Did they copy Super Mario Bros.?

Yes, but the copy seemed better than the original.
